The mission of LeRoy Heritage Museum is to collect items which are significant pieces of southwestern Bradford County history and to educate the residents of southwestern Bradford County, and visitors to the area, about the fascinating history of this area. We focus on the communities of Canton Borough, Canton Township, LeRoy Township, Granville Township, Alba Borough, and former Barclay Township (now part of Franklin).
The first meeting of LeRoy Heritage Museum, Inc. was held on May 19, 2001. A group of local citizens, who were both interested in local history and concerned about how that history should be preserved, began to formulate the idea of creating a museum in LeRoy. This newly formed group became a sub-organization of the LeRoy Community Association, Inc. and purchased the former Open Hand Grange building on July 18, 2001. Work then began on raising the funding and making plans to renovate and restore the old building. On July 5, 2005, LeRoy Heritage Museum was incorporated and became LeRoy Heritage Museum, Inc. At that time, ownership of the building officially passed from the LeRoy Community Association to the LeRoy Heritage Museum, Inc. The museum opened to the public for the first time after a multi-year restoration project with a grand opening in May of 2010. In October 2015, the museum received a generous donation of a 3.7 acre property located on Route 414 in the center LeRoy and we moved the museum to this location after another multi-year renovation, opening on June 5, 2022. Our original building now holds our research collection.
The Monogram is a semi-annual publication of LeRoy Heritage Museum, Inc. It features museum updates, new historical research, photographs, and much more. Members receive this magazine, which ranges from 24 to 36 pages, as a benefit of their partnership with LHM. The Monogram was originally a newspaper that was published in LeRoy by Charles S. Holcomb beginning in 1891.
The LeRoy Heritage Museum is operated by a volunteer board of directors. These people have an interest in preserving the history and heritage of our area. If you are interested in being considered for a position on the board please contact the LeRoy Heritage Museum by mail or online with a letter of interest. Membership is required in order to be considered for a seat on the board.
